Lüneburg is a salt city: the salt works, one of the oldest and largest industrial operations in Europe, only closed here in 1980. Before that, the white gold had shaped Lüneburg for more than 1,000 years, making the city rich and powerful. The museum tells the story.
In the brewhouse of the Kronen brewery, you can take a look at the brew kettle, fermenting vat and malt mills. The oldest known brewery in Lüneburg is presented and its craft is honored.
Since 2006, the telenovela Rote Rosen (Red Roses) has been running very successfully daily in the early afternoon on the German television channel Ersten: It is primarily filmed in Lüneburg. If you want to visit the filming locations, you will find them in the beautiful old town. As a fan of the series, you will recognize many a setting in the small winding streets.
Lüneburg’s town hall is made up of several buildings built over the centuries – its style is correspondingly diverse. During a guided tour you can visit the court arbor, the prince’s hall, the old archive, the chancellery and the large council chamber – everything is very well preserved.

The old town of Lüneburg is wonderfully romantic: here you can lose yourself in many picturesque and winding alleys and quietly take in the beauty of the buildings. There are Gothic churches and historic gabled houses to see. But also a lot of young life: As a university town, Lüneburg attracts many students.
It’s only a stone’s throw away: Just north of the city center, you’ll find the chalk lake in Lüneburg. You are not allowed to swim here, but it is a great recreation area for resting, walking and cycling. On the northern shore, you can see the light-colored limestone of the bedrock particularly well.
Named after church reformer Martin Luther, this church is located in the municipality of Deutsch Evern on the Lüneburg Heath. It is unusually housed in a farmhouse – a historic two-stall house from the 17th century. Especially the modern interior design is more than worth a visit.
More than 1,200 animals of over 130 species live on more than 60 hectares in the Lüneburger Heide Wildlife Park. Here you can meet bears, wolves or even woolly pig, fallow deer and moorland sheep – a real experience for those who like nature and animals.
In 1392, Lüneburg possessed the so-called stacking right: anyone who wanted to offer his goods for sale in the region as a merchant first had to “stack” them in Lüneburg – in other words, offer them for sale. Among other things, the city enforced this stacking right with the Lüneburg Landwehr – a system of land defense ditches.
Salt, which was so important for Lüneburg, was once transported along this route. Today you can explore it very well by bike: 116 kilometers of route connect the old Hanseatic cities of Lüneburg and Lübeck.
In August and September the heath is in bloom: then this area shows all its splendor. The Lüneburg Heath is a flat heath, marsh and forest landscape. Named after Lüneburg, it reaches as far as Hamburg, Bremen and Hanover.
